THE LEGACY PROJECT

At Burning Man, the Man Burn celebrates life, creativity, and community, while the Temple Burn is a time for reflection, reminiscence, and emotional release. In honour of these two significant events on playa, The Gallery Foundation is proud to present the Legacy Project.

Throughout the week, The Gallery will anchor connectivity through the celebration of our shared experiences, culminating in a powerful collaboration with The Temple of Together. Join us on Sunday from 11:00PM - 2:00AM for a moving montage of lost loved ones as we ground and heal as a community.

At Burning Man 2024, The Gallery Foundation is honoured to be collaborating with The Temple of Together exhibiting the Legacy Project: a magnanimous projected montage of lost loved ones compiled as photos and video, submitted by all burner participants.

This projection will land on the 52-foot tall, 44-foot wide Gallery Tower where the community can ground together to celebrate, grieve, and release in a space of understanding and compassion. Taking place on Sunday from 11.00PM - 2.00AM at 9.30 & Esplanade, we will illuminate the 5-story structure and culminate the space with heartfelt stories and a shared new experience.

As this is a tribute to the whole of our community, we encourage and invite all burners to contribute to this act of remembrance whether it be in image or video.

In respect and integrity, all of those choosing to submit content will need to sign a consent of usage form, more information on the submission page – button below.

OUR INTENT

Life is fragile, beautiful and to be cherished. At times, it ends too quickly. That loss can become palpable and affect one’s spirit in a multitude of ways in which we don’t know how to express it. Grief is a process – it comes in forms that can be muddled and painful, but the goal is that it strengthens us to celebrate life. This is the human experience. We must grieve. We must love. And we must keep moving on– for life is an ongoing dance of this expression.

Sometimes there are rare moments where you are granted the time, the energy and the quiet consciousness where you can reflect on the love or spirit lost. To liberate that emotional strain is to heal, and that is one of life's greatest offerings: release and growth intertwined.

The Burning Man Temple is a temporary construct, one which respects the Paiute people and culture. The Temple of Together has healing energies; it embraces all those seeking reflection, resolution, release, and renewal. The Temple's sacred space acts as a place of refuge, connection, and freedom– a space in which any burner can visit throughout The Burn. On Sunday, the final day of The Burn, a monumental ceremony takes place where The Man is burnt in homage to the lifecycle of souls. This is a pinnacle moment for all that participate, as it represents the cycle of life, death and renewal – an evolutionary process in which we are all connected.

A most beautiful truth is that we are all temporary in existence. Our lives are a tumultuous wave of highs and lows, yet what keeps us grounded is love and respect for each other. The Legacy Project has been dreamt up through The Gallery Foundation community and far beyond, as it hopes to provide a way for every one of us to ponder and celebrate the mystery, the beauty and the passion of life.
